Analysis of the Publication & Communication Paper Grades



Verle Sutton received his bachelor's degree from the University of Missouri at St. Louis and a master's degree in Industrial Psychology from Southern Illinois University.

After five years working in manufacturing, and a stint at Merrill Lynch in St. Louis, Verle entered the paper business in the late 1970s. He assumed the position of vice president of sales and marketing for Pentair's coated groundwood paper mill in Niagara, Wisconsin in 1984. While at Niagara, Verle conducted the marketing portion of the feasibility study that resulted in a new $420-million greenfield SCA paper machine in Duluth, Minnesota. In 1986, when the decision was made to go forward with the project (Lake Superior Paper Industries), Verle was asked to join the five-member team responsible for managing the mill, and to assume the position of vice president of sales and marketing. The start-up and early years of Lake Superior Paper Industries were a great success, from both a sales and a manufacturing perspective.

In 1991, Verle founded R.O.S. Paper Sales, a company that sells paper on behalf of mills throughout North America and Europe.

In 1999, Verle launched The Reel Time Report. In 2003, Reel Time was sold to Forestweb, Inc. (now Industry Intelligence) on the understanding that Verle would continue to produce the content for the monthly publication. Over the years, Reel Time has become a highly respected publication, recognized for its insight and accurate forecasts.

In addition to Verle's publishing responsibilities, he has become increasingly involved with consulting projects and multi-client reports. Verle carried out a marketing feasibility study for a recycled pulp mill that became Superior Recycled Fiber. Other interesting consulting projects included a coater project at Blandin Paper, a lawsuit initiated by a mountain states newspaper publisher, a grievance action against Abitibi-Consolidated in Grand Falls, Newfoundland, and a newsprint study for the provincial government of Newfoundland. Verle also does project work from time to time for a number of paper companies, such as Catalyst, Irving Paper, Howe Sound, Asian Pulp and Paper (APP), Norske Skog, Glatfelter and others. In addition, he consults for large paper consumers on a regular basis.

Verle is occasionally asked to speak at conferences sponsored by groups such as the PPPC (Pulp and Paper Products Council), GPC (Gravure Publishing Council), PSI (Paper Stock Institute — a paper recycling trade organization), etc. He is also invited to speak at paper company sales meetings and customer events.

Until 2012, Verle’s consulting projects and speaking activities were carried out under the Reel Time corporate name. However, since a substantial and growing part of Verle’s time is involved with consulting, it became appropriate to create a separate corporate identity for this work. Sutton Paper Strategies is that entity.
